Case Study : Daisy

"Because of you, hundreds of children’s lives have been impacted and changed."

We first met Daisy through our Radio Routes project in Brixham with Youth Genesis back in 2019 and from that, invited her and her friends to join Radio Ahead. Running for six years now, the project provides vulnerable Year 6 students with creative experiences in radio broadcasting and music-making through Ocean Youth Radio, aimed at building their confidence, improving communication skills, and reducing social isolation as they prepare for the often-challenging transition to secondary school.

Daisy’s passion for radio was clear from the start; she built confidence by connecting with other station members, staff, and young listeners in the community, going on to host a weekend breakfast show. She began by volunteering at Ocean Youth Radio throughout school alongside her studies.

Daisy co-produced and hosted 300 Seconds last year, a podcast series for young people focussing on strategies to help with mental health, a topic close to her heart, which went on to win Silver in the Grassroots category at the ARIAS in Covent Garden earlier this year, where she met her radio inspiration, Greg James.

Six years after we first met Daisy, her dedication has elevated her to the role of Assistant Radio Manager and she now mentors younger students, guiding them in creating jingles, conducting interviews, presenting live shows, producing features, and crafting lyrics and songs – passing on her extensive knowledge and skills to the next generation.

I’ve been with you guys for six years so far and to say I’ve grown as a person is an understatement. I am now extremely confident. I’m happy within myself and know that I always have your support.

I loved taking part in 300 Seconds. Mental health is such a hidden topic and
has always been brushed under the carpet - it’s really helped me realise that everyone suffers with mental health issues, that it’s normal and that we shouldn’t suffer alone.
