Broadcasting 24/7 Listen Live

Play By Ear

Play By Ear is an early intervention programme working with artists using creative music, radio production and multi-platform broadcasting to engage and inspire disadvantaged and vulnerable children

Play By Ear was an early intervention programme using creative music, radio production and multi-platform broadcasting to engage and inspire disadvantaged and vulnerable children and young people in their communities across Torbay. This two year project targeted 120 young people with a talent or interest in music and/or radio and brought in artists from across the country to inspire the staff team and young people involved.

Participants explored and reflected on their lives and the challenges that they face using live and pre-recorded radio features, 3D dramas, rapping, song writing, spoken word and jingles. They broadcast this content live in community-based music radio events to celebrate their achievements and produce digital images for online sharing. The participants aim to earn an Arts Award Discover accreditation.

The Sound Communities team worked alongside established artists to improve their skills and offer further opportunities to the young people we work with.

Key Aims:

  • Increase confidence in young people’s creative expression
  • Improve young people's self-esteem and well being
  • Celebrate young people's achievements within the community
  • Develop our team’s practise
