“Welcome to Torbay, where we don’t get a say”, was the key message behind this project designed by the core team of young people who have created our Oceanside record label. The young rappers wanted to create a track that raises awareness about the lack of opportunities available for them within Torbay and how they face prejudice and often stereotyped. The group wrote the lyrics themselves about the experiences of their difficult upbringings and experiences in mainstream education.
Welcome To Torbay
A music production and video project raising awareness of the power of marginalised youth voices in Torbay.
Our young producers wanted to enhance the message of their track and increase the audience by creating a music video featuring areas in the Bay that they felt they had some ‘ownership’ over as a safe space including Crossways Car Park, Goodrington Seafront, Paignton Pier and Ellacombe Park. The young people helped co-ordinate and facilitate the filming in what was a new experience for all of them.
The video was hugely successful, achieving over 30,000 views on Youtube in one week. It was also well received by local councillors who supported the young people using art to express themselves and get their message across.
Key Aims:
- Develop young people's creativity
- Develop young people's agency
- Increase young people's confidence and self-esteem
- Develop young people's writing and production skills
- Reduce young people's anti-social behaviour
- Develop young people's employability
