Non- Executive Directors

We now have three non-executive directors who have been committed to Sound Communities for over ten years through sitting on our advisory board.

Matthew Pontin

Matthew Pontin is co-founder and director of Fotonow CIC and also a photographer, educator and social enterprise advocate. Matthew is also a fellow of the RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce).  Matthew believes that social enterprise can help shape a better society and bring a more equitable and sustainable future for the communities organisations serve. As a non-exec at Sound Communities Matthew will bring a combination of a listening ear, advocacy around your creative journey and nurture partnerships and impactful funding opportunities.

Emma Clements

As Executive Editor for BBC Devon and Cornwall, Emma Clements has managed two teams to create and produce a range of content from local clips on BBC Sounds, to social media posts and 148 hours a week of radio shows. Emma went to Paignton Community College, trained as a journalist, and worked in commercial and BBC newsrooms across the South reading the news and reporting before moving into production and management. Emma loves what she does and believes radio is amazing, and sounds have real power, which is why she got involved with Sound Communities after seeing what a difference it makes to young people’s lives.

In 2015 her son Dan contacted the Ocean Youth team, he struggled with friendships and communication but loved his Saturday Show and every week grew a bit more with the encouragement and freedom that it gave him. Emma still relishes the challenge of coming up with new ideas and programme formats and wants to use this creativity along with her team and change management experience to help them move forward in a creative and sustainable way with young people at the core of what they do. Emma brings industry knowledge and insights to help young people in Torbay have a voice either through the media or in a way no one has thought of…yet!

Kate Hewett

Kate Hewett was leading the Dartington School for Social Entrepreneurs Start-Up programme which Kate Rudman and Mitch Knight took part in back in 2010. Kate (Rudman) talked about her dream of having a ‘boom bus’ with a digital radio station on board which, after much sweat and toil, became Sound Communities. Since then Kate (Hewett) stayed in touch with the founding directors and became a member of the Advisory Board soon after Mike Cook joined the team. She has watched them grow it from an idea, to a small part-time team fitting projects in around their other jobs, to a thriving organisation with multiple operational streams and a major provider of support and development opportunities to young people in the Torbay area. She is delighted to have been asked to become a Non- Executive Director, her first formal role at Sound Communities (even if the two Kates do sometimes make things a bit confusing…). She brings a passion for people, development and creative expression as well as broad organisational knowledge and good understanding of leadership challenges and dynamics.

Kate has worked in the private sector, for two NHS trusts in Devon, for the School for Social Entrepreneurs and other not-for-profit organisations, and has set up a couple of small businesses focussed on wellbeing and personal development. Today she holds a Non Executive Director role in a commercial property company as well as at Sound Communities, and continues to coach leaders and individuals at moments of challenge or change in their lives.
